May 2026 Events

As part of our open house this May, we presented a programme of talks and musical performances: all finished now, but we were delighted with the response and will consider more next year!

Talks

We are delighted to be joined by our friend Dr Alexandra Loske, art historian, writer and curator of the Royal Pavilion. Jane’s portrait of Alexandra is here, and will be on show in the open house.

Alexandra will give short, informal talks about the art in the house, and will answer questions. The topics will be portraiture and colour (the subject of several of her books).

  • Sat May 9th at 11.30am, Portraiture
  • Sun May 10th at 11.30am, Colour
  • Sat May 16th at 2.30pm, Colour
  • Sun May 17th at 11.30am, Portraiture

Music: Guqin

Our guest artist Jing Wang is not only a specialist in traditional Chinese visual art, but also a musician and a member of London Youlan Qin Society. Come and hear her playing the guqin, a traditional Chinese instrument, alongside her art at 5.00pm on Sunday 10th May.

Music: Intermezzo

Twelve paintings by Jane Palmer to accompany Robert Schumann’s song cycle ‘Liederkreis’ opus 39.

Schumann’s ‘Liederkreis’ is a collection of 12 songs setting poems from Joseph von Eichendorff’s collection ‘Intermezzo’, full of romantic metaphors about landscape and natural forces.

Jane Palmer’s landscape paintings take inspiration from nature but always represent states of mind. Twelve paintings around the piano each relate to one of the Liederkreis songs.

To accompany the art, you can hear Liederkreis performed by baritone Simon Madge, with Stephen Engelhard at the piano, at 5.00pm on Sunday 3rd May AND at 5.00pm on Saturday 16th May.
