Jane also uses pencils but finds charcoal more expressive and sympathetic. It enables her to build up layers to create dense textures – an ‘archaeology of the face’. Jane has recently been especially interested in representing moments of trauma or crisis.

Jane’s self portrait “Getting There” was shown in Figurative Art Now, a new figurative art prize and exhibition to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Federation of British Artists. Hosted by the Mall Galleries, the exhibition was online from 7th July to 29th September 2021.
